Our Organ
In 1989, Christ Church commissioned the Little Rock firm of Nichols & Simpson, Inc. to design and build
an organ for our worship space. We asked that the organbuilders take into consideration our desire for an instrument capable of many varied functions: leading our Christian family in worship and hymn singing; accompanying choral groupsand instrumental ensembles; and rendering a wide variety of recital literature. We also asked that the new instrument re-use much of the pipework from the church’s previous 1954 Moller organ designed by Ernest White. The resulting design was an organ of 63 ranks and 42 stops over three manuals and pedal. The console from which the organist plays the instrument is made of oak and burled walnut, with keys crafted of bone and rosewood. The visible façade of pipes on either side of the chancel is constructed of painted and polished zinc.
Since its completion in 1990, the Christ Church organ has been the vehicle for many organ programs of musical outreach. A Musical Offering presented a yearly series of recitals by artists from across the United States and abroad. The organ has been utilized annually by The Wildwood Festival for the Performing Arts and was featured during the Region VII Convention of the American Guild of Organists. The Christ Church instrument has been widely acclaimed by artists and listeners alike as one of the most beautiful and inspiring aspects of our church, as well as an outstanding example of the organbuilder’s art.Visit their web site at www.nicholsandsimpson.com.
